bunk beds

Bunk Beds are always reminiscent of those heady hedonistic summer holidays spent at a famous holiday camp which shall remain nameless for obvious reasons. It was in the West country which seemed to enjoy excellent hot summers all those years ago that a group of lads and myself worked as Camp helpers during the University summer break. We performed a variety of tasks including grounds maintenance and waste disposal, bar tending in the evening and also worked as floor waiters in the events venue during concerts and other entertainments for the campers. One lad was even trained up to call out the Bingo numbers at the daily show. My abiding memory of every evening after our days work was climbing into the Bunk Beds provided for us, for a nights sleep. I drew the short straw and ended up sleeping in the bottom bunk which was fine until the body above started moving about during the night. My sleep was always disturbed by his tossing and turning and this proved the only downside of sharing a bunk bed or was it? On reflection there were other instances when he turned in late the worse for wear and tramped all over me in an effort to access the top bunk. I was probably also guilty of disturbing his sleep on occasions but he did not experience the same annoyance as I simply had to roll into my bottom bunk without climbing all over him. We shared a very small chalet as did the other lads and it was great fun most of the time. There was always an amusing incident to laugh about usually to do with campers doing silly things or behaving badly. Many of the holiday makers reserved family chalets with bunk beds if they had numerous children to accommodate and those kids had wonderful fun especially if they were not used to sleeping in a bunk bed at home. For them it was a new adventure and bunk beds were an added holiday camp attraction. Some children shared Bunk Beds for kids in chalets adjacent to their parents and that little bit of extra independence provided the catalyst for great fun and partying which was interrupted from time to time by concerned parents. The only real pain for we holiday workers was constantly having to open chalet doors for forgetful people who left their keys inside and then left automatically closing the door behind them. This was a bit irksome as it happened on a daily basis but we got used to the inconvenience and just continued on regardless to perform our tasks and chores. All the events of the day were recalled as we lay in our bunk beds at night and all the temporary redcoats apparently followed the same ritual which provided howls of laughter some cynicism and a lot of scepticism. Every funny incident was always embellished if not totally exaggerated to provoke uncontrollable, side splitting laughter and it worked. This was a smashing release valve for all the tensions and stresses of our daily routines and a great way to chill out and relax before a good nights sleep. That working holiday will always evoke memories of Bunk Beds.
